if im correct the egr thing re-curculates exhaust gases back into the inlet. if so, surely it causes a higher inlet temperature? and this is bad for performance as cooler inlet temperatures provide bigger power? any one know how it works/ why its there? can u remove it and are there any benefits in doing so?

block the hose between EGR valve and the Inlet Manifold. It Works and fouls the ECU

get a gasket to put between it so it blocks it off

That's the way to do it mate! Block it off with a custom fabricated gasket/blanking plate. I haven't done this myself, but plan to in the near future, as my EGR keeps giving me grief. Apparently you'll boost your power up slightly too (barely noticeable though).
Unfortunately you can't just reef it out, cos it's wired to the ECU. It recirculates unburned gases back into the engine to improve emissions, at low engine speed.

BTW you WILL fail the MOT on emmisions if you do this. The EGR valve is an integral part of ANY modern engine.

Mine went through MoT without one no probs.
Personally if your is knackered then remove it but if its not broken then leave it any improvement in performance will be negligible.
