I have a problem deleting certain files. They have long filenames and I cant get rid of them. This error message comes up:
Cannot delete file. The filename you specified is invalid or too long. Specify a different filename.
I’ve tried renaming them but the same message comes up. How do I get rid?

u using xp? if so, start > programs > accessories > Command Prompt then you have to navigate to the folder... firstly by typing 'cd\' to take you to c:\ then by typing 'cd foldername' to get to the folder.

once there type 'ren oldfilename newfilename' and it should rename it

make sure that you don't have a program open at the moment with those files?

i.e. got word open looking at the documents - and your trying to delete them else where...

If there's only one file with that name, use a wildcard in the selection, for example

The filename is 'thisisastupidlylongfilenameforcrappywindowstounderstand.doc'

So at the command prompt, put:

ren thisis*.doc newname.doc

Or you could just delete it, using the same method

del thisis*.doc

as long as there aren't similarly named files in there, otherwise the wildcard will include those too!
