My girlfriend is lookin at cars so we went to test drive a gorgeous, mint 106 Gti in silver... leather interior ... T reg.. I have never been in one or driven one but heard they are quick etc....

Anyways, she wanted me to drive it off the forecourt, get to a quiet place so she could drive it, so i thought cool... something with the punch of the veccy....

Got it out of the forecourt and nailed it in 1st and 2nd....and was well dissapointed, just felt nippy.. the vectra pushed you in your seat but there was none of that... it just felt like my old Corsa sport (Nippy)... The road handling was good but both me and my G/F were dissapointed as she drove it too... It just felt so small and tacky, i was so glad to get back in Vectra it felt like a beast compared.... Why do people rave about these cars?

106 Gti drivers - I'm not slagging them off, in fact they look the bollox(If a little small) just a bit dissapointed...

end of the day its a 1600!

What litre is your veccy? 2.2? 2.5 V6? Either way i bet its tourque figures are huge compared with a little 106 hot hatch!

Your corsa was surely a GSi or a 1600 sport to compare it with the GTi???

And still power to wieght will prevail!

OK i'm telling you what i thought...and i know my cars! I understand the torque factor...but it didn't even feel quick..the Vec is 2.5...no need to agrue, its a meerly a observation on my behalf... I just thought it would have more punch!

i think the difference is the fun factor also

i have a lend of a mazda mx6 and compared to my golf it does feel faster, and u do get a kick in the back from it on acceleration

but its a totally different drive to the golf, u have to ring the neck out of the golf, where as the mx6 is effortless between 2k-5k rpm

I think it might have something to do with the size of a car...like if you were in a bus... and it did 0-60 in 5 seconds you'd be wow!! but if a scooby you'd be like cool but no big deal.... maybe it was that plus there were 3 people in the car...

It always feels the other way round for me... bro drives a 300bhp Volvo T5R and I'm like 'this isn't that quick really' but my Corsa feels quicker even though I know it's slower on 0-60 and beyond...

Oh and the 3 people in the car bit is the reason why -- as it's not the most torquey engine it really suffers with load -- put 3 people in my corsa and it's half as much fun as when I'm on my own...

So 190kg added onto car which is around 20-25% of it's weight again

I have had 5 people (One of them 20stone) in the vectra and it feels no slower, must be the torque factor....

you really need to rev them to get the best out of the engine, keep it buzzing above 4.5k and it flys. Under that its a bit flat tbh.
