It was ok this morning, i'm sure of it!
It will be quite simple to fix, grind it out a bit, refill sand and paint, or am i wrong?
How long should it last before it needs re-doing?

only way ull get a crack is if its not been done properly
mine was welded, fibreglassed to bridge the materials then a light skim of filler
in almost 3 years it has not cracked once
if anything it will sink if done properly, i bet the crack is where the old recess used to be too, meaning it hasnt been bridged
my door handles sank last year, and are just starting to g oagain, but these get a lot of whack from slamming the door

It shouldnt really crack like that if its seam welded and the metal plate is keyed well. Maybe grind some of the crack away as it looks like the crack has followed the recess, if it was seam welded it prob wouldnt do that. Then the whole plate should be keyed really well so the fibreglass really grips to the metal, regardless of vibration or opening and closing of the boot.

Looks like he's just used filler and its sunk!
