Sorry to be stupid, but what is this about "air filter dirt retention additive"?
I have just put a BFO Cone on my car last weekend.

A foam filter filters air by stopping large particles with the foam... smaller ones are stopped by sticking them to a special oil coating.... dirt retention aditive..
You shouldn;t be using the BFO without the additive! It will be letting small particles into the engine.
If you can't find a BFO cleaning and oiling kit you should be able to find a PiperX one which is just as good.

Just spoke to pvd and they have informed me that I don't need to put this on as It did not come with it in the box. They did say that I would need to clean it though every so often. Is this the case as I did not put this stuff on when I put my original air filter on?

original air filter? you mean a paper one? that needs no spray as its not free flowing.
Whenever you clean it oil it as cleaning strips oil.
