Exactly the same happened to my sony h/u fookin scary!
Red and yellow wires change between continuos power supply to the h/u. Best thing to do is connect a direct wire from the battery to the headunit with a fuse in it.
Both red and yellow wires are +

We'll wire the red wire direct from the battery, and leave the yellow wire unplugged, if it works your ok. it should do, cos all it is, is anoth + wire
And yes cd player will have constant power supplier when the facia is on.

I did the same thing with an unfortunate slip of the fingers. Melted loadsa wires together behind the dash, managed to get everything working normal but its not even worth sending it to vauxhall to replace all the wiring. Got my alarm wired in and they couldnt wire up my head lamps to it cos of the meltedness. Sh1t happens i guess.

Just connect up both the red and yellow wires from the back of the stereo to the red wire from the car, then you will have a constant feed and wont need to have the keys in the ignition tto listen to the stereo.
