My car had similar behaviour, eg seemd to run ok in the afternoon, leave it overnight, first time I tried to start it was very hesitant to start then engine warning light comes on etc. Of course you could have something else wrong but it does sound very similar to mine. I'd advise doing a paperclip test yourself to see if you've got any fault codes logged (which might give you a clue, although on mine it needed a real-time analysis to find the fault)..
This guy's done some good articles, have a look to get an idea of what to do:
http://www.topbuzz1.carenthusiasts.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm
He's also got an article on idle control motors that might be worth a read.
Unfortunately my car (99) has the wrong pinout to the diag socket and couldn't read fault codes this way,
if yours is the same all you can do is take it to dealer and get them to plug a tech 2 in. You could take it to dealer and just pay for the tech 2 diagnostics before you agree to pay them to do any work, that's what I did, once I understood the problem I fixed it myself by getting parts from the scrappy to avoid getting ripped off any further by them. I think if I'd taken it into the dealer and just said "fix it" they'd probably have put a new air mass meter on (they were sure that was the problem to start off) as well as the idle motor which would have cost me something like over 400 quid (I kid u not, about 300 for air meter, another 80 for idle motor, and labor). Luckily these parts are really easy to fit yourself, you just have to identify the problem. Personally I'd phone round the scrappies and see if you can get another idle motor, put it on and try it out, I got one for a tenner. That way you don't pay the rip-off 40-50 quid they want for the tech 2 diag, and if it doesn't fix it you're only 10 quid worse off. Of course if you're unlucky then you've got a different problem from my car, but it does sound very similar from your description. Good luck!

One more thing you can try for free to see if it makes any difference before you take to dealer is to clean the plug contacts to air mass meter and idle motor, use cotton bud and isopropanol. Be careful not to use too much force, you need to avoid bending the contact pins. This job can be done in about 15 minutes. In all honesty that probably won't fix it but worth a try.

If you're going to get dealer to just look for fault codes with ecu, it works like this: go to dealer and ask them to clear all the existing fault codes (you can have lots of old ones stored that aren't important); then run the car for a couple of days, long enough to see the problem and have the engine mgmt light come on a couple of times; then go back to dealer and get them to read the latest fault codes. (Of course if this is under warranty then it's not going to cost anything).

took it 2 vaux yesterday and they said they couldnt fit me in...so off into the workshop i went and asked a fitter if he could take a look 4 me right quick....
he told me 2 come bk at 1pm, so i did and he stuck it on tech 2 for me....and said that the idle control motor was puttin out a 2 high voltage....took him bout 5mins, so i dropped him a tenner and left....
