no i have an L reg gsi. i blew the original engine up(c16xe), and rather than get it reconditioned i just got hold of a x16xe lump. gave it to a garage and they removed the old one and fitted the new one. thats all they did.
so question is do i get a x16xe ecu to go with the engine? the car runs ok but perhaps not as well as it should

Good question, I would like to also know the answer.
Have you got the chip and transponder from the X16XE? Else the car won't run.

afm is air flow meter.
the c16xe runs an air flow meter where as the x16xe runs a manifold pressure sensor (MAP)
So the looms are different and the ecus.
I suspect that your mechanic has fitted the x16xe block with all the ancillaries from the c16xe!

I'd suspect that as well Ainsley, X block and head, C inlet manifold, loom, ecu etc.
Shouldn't be much wrong with that, although it might not work 100% due to different compression.
