non eco-tech are C16XE and eco-tech versions were X16XE like the 1.6 sports are

of ya mean engine number it will be on a flat bit of the block as ya look down on it above the oil filter

if it has a big round shiny thing ontop of the exhaust manifold its a ecotec

it is an ecotec!
If it has a shiny part like a top hat (EGR valve) on the exhaust manifold then its an x16xe, if not then its a c16xe.
Code and engine number are on the block where it bolts to the gearbox!
