what would it sound like if ive fucked up the timing when putting the head back on my 20XE? so the valves are hitting the pistons.
I cant hear any thing when i just turn it over but when i start it there a really loud banging noise, imagine an old deisel engine first thing in the mornin, its twice as bad.
engine hasnt been run for over 6 weeks

tried leaving it running for a while?
think the hydraulic lifters take a while to get oil pressure back into them.
dunno what valve/piston contact sounds like though.

if piston met valve, your engine wouldn't run for long... remember our old astra belmont introduced valve to piston, was a clunk then it died...

this may not help much
but me and a mate re-built a zetec 1.8 16v
at the turn of a key the bottom end let go.still waiting on the full re-port but that was coz of raised compression
yours may be the lifters are noisy

if valves have meet the pistons it would misfire cuz youd bend valves so they wouldnt seat in the head. as for tappets just let it run so the oil gets up to them, weve had cars at work, it was a rover 16v and it took a day for the tappets to shut up after doin haed gasket on it

it might all have lined up when you put it on, did you then turn the engine round 1 pm by hand and then check it all still lines up? cos chances are its still wrong. sounds like the cam timing is a tooth out maybe.

Your meant to turn the engine over a couple of times by hand to double check the timing and belt tension. I've always turned mine several times by hand to double check, I've always been paranoid about cam belts.
If its a tooth out it wont sound any different, apart from maybe lumpy (rough) to get valve piston contact I suspect your looking at at least 2-3 teeth out.
If its been stood for a while it might well be the tappets.

i bet its the cam timing though, if the pump was out it would struggle to start.
when you fed the belt in if you leave the slack the wrong side of the tensioner it can make it a couple of teeth out even though at first it looks spot on, i would double check it all again.

u should get away with being 1 maybe even 2 teeth out without the valves are pistons coliding.... but the engine would sound and run like sh*t....

After my engine re-build mine had new lifters put in and when we started it for the first time it was SO tappy top end, we run the engine up to temperaure and it was still tapping, must have took a good 45 mins to quiet down, one minute it was really loud next it just went silent and sounded sweet. Just give it a good run
