The Subaru gets its sound from having the horizontally opposed boxer 4 engine. It has two heads, each with, 8 valves and 2 camshafts. Making it, 4 cylinder, 16 valve, quad cam. Two heads on each side. Very similar to a car with a V configuration but instead of being on an angle "/" the pistons are flat "_" with the crank in the middle.
The main reason they have the noise they do though is because of the way the engine is with two heads, the exhaust headers (manifolds) that come from each side of the engine have to be unequal lengths to get to the same place at the turbo (which is situated on the left of the engine, quite high up, so the exhaust header on the right of the engine has to travel further than the exhaust header on the left)
Thats why lots of tuned Scoobies lose the classic noise as one of the things to do to boost performance is to use equal legnth headers.
Not easy to follow, but I hope it helps, as you dont know these sort of things unless someone tells you or you read about it.............and I reckon all those people who just took the p*ss out of someone for asking a question they dont know, didnt know why Scoobies have that sound either! Easy to say "its because they have flat 4 engines"...........but that doesnt explain dick all does it eh?!!!

Your car never sounded like a scooby ever. You thought it did, you thought it sounded nice, but I guess you have never heard your car when your going down the street while you rev it up - it will probably sound crap, a load of noise, but no rumble.

It's very obvious you won't agree with each other. Let's talk some facts shall we?
The scooby rumble, is caused by it's engine design, corsa engines don't have this design, therefore no scooby rumble comes from a corsa engine, wether you stick subaru stickers on it or 'RB5' graphics allover your car IT WILL NEVER SOUND LIKE A SCOOBY, never has neither, you just noticed a slight resemblence that's all.

You don't want an stupid gay noises coming from a Corsa. It's a Corsa, a 1.6 Corsa at that, mothing special, just a 1600 16v shoppig cart.

will you please stop acting like a prick. If the 1.6 engine is good enough for westfields to race with, its good enough to sit in a corsa.

Y'know throttle bodies can sometimes give you the noise your after. Get the injectors to fire in pairs aswell!
My old 2.1 16 valve corsa ran throttle bodies and that had its own noise especially at 8000rpm. Not raspy, but deep and low, almost like the car was misfiring a bit.

I was just about to say about the flat four throb comes frome having unequal length headers, I know what these guys mean when they say there car sounds like a scooby as it does, my mum has MY00 UK turbo with prodrive performance pack which gives the car a hike in performance and gives the car the noise it should come with standard, and she even commented on how similar it sounds(being traded in for a Golf Tdi 150, but i get to drive it this saturday!)
to my Corsa sport 1.4 16V, which has a drilled airbox and no restrictors
