Piper-X Induction Kit on my GSi...
main issue, warm air being drawn in...
Considering swapping it for a standard air-box (not drilled) and panel filter...
Opinions??
Really can't be arsed to build up some sort of heat-shroud & cash is strapped as it is

drill air box all the way
altho if its standard whether you put an induction kit or pannel filter doesnt matter so much as its hardly a noticable mod
stick with pannel filter though i noticed i had a flat spot from 1.5-2.5K with mine on

The standard airbox will leave you feeling robbed of all your 109bhp, even with a performance panel filter and useless drill holes.
Get a sealed unit induction kit if you're really not happy with an open cone. At the weekend Broster's 1.6 (Viper) was so much happier to rev than my 1.6 (panel + airbox), which just held the revs long after the throttle was released... even with the engine off

Joff - how much would I be looking at for a sealed unit? Or would it be possible to adapt something to seal the piper-x I've already got?

Depends if you want a tailored fitment or a universal filter Paul.
You can quite easily have a heat shield fabricated or possibly use the heat shield from an Audi TT or Renault 5 Pipercross filter.
Is your GSi C16 or X16XE?
Flat spots occur because the initial supply of air when the throttle is opened is warm air from the engine bay.
Once the vehicle is moving, you'll get the benefit of any cold air feeds you're using (you are using cold air feeds aren't you...?
I found with an open induction kit, the car would rev till the cows came home, but it felt the car just wasn't going anywhere.
With the panel filter, the car feels smooth but power delivery is strangled.

i got a pipercross viper on my C16XE, biggest bunch of wank ever, with the cold air feed attached it gives a HUGE flat spot from 3000rpm -4000rpm, so much so that if revvin between these in 5th the car wont pull through it, soon as i take it off, the flat spot dissapears. weird huh

Joff - its an X16XE, and doesn't have an AFM.
Greasemonkey - that sounds about right with the flatspot on mine atm

air filters do sod all really in terms of power, they just filter air.
maybe its too much air causing flat spots?

On a proper car (Skyline) filters do LOADS. im talking about a 30bhp increase. But they do need cold air. I will dig up a picture of what the rover turbo guys do in their engine bays to keep the heat away.
ok i found one... This is my mate Ste's engine bay. the filter is sitting where the battery WAS. The battery is now in the boot. The filter is also surrounded by a cold air box sheilding it from the engine. This is pretty basic. Some guys have carbon fibre boxes with air intakes to the front of their cars.
