I have a 96 Sport, 1.4 16V, the only trouble is, as with most 16V's, the acceleration is only noticable after 3.5-4k, therefore it has a major weakness over 8V's.
I would like to kno what sort of engine modifications i could do in order 2 open up a bit more power lower down in the rev range?

not really much you can do mate.full system and a manifold.apparently its either the 4-2-1 minifold or the 4-1 minfifold will give u more power down low but less up high and the other gives u less low and more high

An unfortunate characteristic of these engine a bit empty under 4k, kinda obvious cause of the large vlaves the engine has. courtney hi-torque cams maybe. Although revving it more could be a cheaper option

also the first mod on the 16v engine should be the inlet then exhaust manifold, cams and head work

I raced a 16 valve with same mods as my 8 valve, met him 2 weeks previous too the race, so I knew what it was packing, had him upto 70mph very, very easily, only when it got to 70 did he keep up and NOT pass me, the only nice thought for the 16 valve would be the mods would not work so well on the 16 valve, rolling roaded my car last week at Well Lane, figures are:
93bhp @ 5890, 94Ib/ft @ 2800, this is where an 8 valve will win, look at what and where my peak torque is!

An inlet manifold helps everywhere, but as said, just rev it.

That's the deal with 16v versus 8v though. 8v's are better low down but 16v's come into their own once you get to 4k+.
Not really much you can do about it but be safe in the knowledge you'll overtake eventually.
I use the Saxo VTR as a good example. Off the line they are pretty much identical to a 1.6 Sport however once the revs hit 4k I pull away with ease.
Just remember to take the 16v all the way until you feel the power dropping off. Change up at this time.
Power should start to fade before you hit the rev limiter as well.
The above post relates to standard cars only.

Yeah VTR's are 1.6 8vs.
My misses 8v certainly picks up a bit after 4000rpm and pulls all the way to 6,000, with the standard inlet manifold the 16v is a bit crap up high, although that could just be because I was used to driving a 16v with the mantzel fitted...

You are correct but I was comparing 8v against 16v hence comparing a Corsa Sport 1.6 16v with a Saxo 1.6 8v.
A 1.6 16v VTS is faster than a 1.6 16v Sport.
