looking at reviews the Panasonic DMC-FZ10 gives better image

get the canon then. personally I would get a higher mp camera than somthing with a 10x zoom

10x zoom is useless unless you've a big tripod and your subject is dead.
Motorsport - forget it at anything more than 4-5x from a regular frame, you won't be able to use autofocus as its too slow and the lag between pressing the button and the photo being taken is usually enough to make sure the car is entirely out of the frame.
I don't know if things have improved these days but thats why I sold mine and got a DSLR.
For the record, and strictly by way of comparison, a Canon D30 and 75-300 lens would set you back about 350 and be 10 times more versitile.

there are a few point and clicks with small shutter lag but it's no where near like what SLR's are

just bought the gf's dad a sony powershot p73 and i have to say i am impressed
i am going for the dimage z2 tho sometime this week i think - that or the figi s3500
