If customs happen to look in it you'll get charged. If its marked as gift which it most likely will be they probably won't and you'll be ok.

they bust the box open and have a look, and if its an import item there is usually a phone number, which they can call and get the details.

Gift allowance is £36 if its declared more on the customs paperwork then you will be clobbered with 10% import tax and 17.5% vat.

Putting it as a gift doesnt mean you get away with not paying tax.

Customs dont see the parcels, they only see the paperwork supplied by the shipper. They'll pick the odd parcel for an inspection when they come through the import centre but thats it.

Allowance is £18 on new goods and £36 for gifts.

Before ordering anything outside of the EU take in to account that you may have to pay import duty and VAT...

Well putting it as a gift and not saying its worth over 36 quid is what most people do then. Had stuff from china marked as gift before and it was worth a lot more than £36.

Can I just point out to you lot that import duty (tax) is NOT 10%; there are different rates depending on what you are importing!

They are getting wise to the old gift scam so be warey. Most suppliers will include either an invoice or a receipt inside which gives the game away.

Not sure of the percentages but u can expect something around £20 per every £100 of the products value/purchase price.

The gift scam isnt a good idea either as most parcels will also have insurance paperwork with it too, showing its real value. Ur better doing it the safe way and declaring it and having it insured for its full value in case its damaged in transit.
