1.4 8v 40 miles for £10 is doing my head in.
any advice on what to check to solve this prob? i may have a fuel leak as if i leave my car over night next morning it does seem a tad lower.. maybe just me but incase it isnt how would i check for a fuel leak???
any help appriciated!

Look for drips under the car.

I have identified your problem as having a shite engine.
Luckily for you, I have an X16XE for sale which really would look at home under your bonnet.
Comes with the manifold, gearbox, ECU and loom, etc. so there's no hassle with getting anything else.

I have identified your problem as having a shite engine.

i was only pi55ing joking abotu gettign dirty ffs. lol.
luke where do i search for this valve? i can confirm i lose about £3 a petrol if i leave it over night or atleast 5 hours.

check the seal on the fuel cap
if you can smell fuel in the car check the seal on the pump under the seats
check the dogy fuel line that goes into the inlet manifold see if its worked loose.......
and check the carcoal canister pipes havent come loose <i doubt this one very much
also check there isnt a hole in any of the lines inder ther car the fuel filter isnt leaking or there isnt a hole in the tank
if its loosing it through running
check the temp sensor on the block near the thermostat and the map sensor is working ok

If its leaking half its petrol you should be able to smell it easily.

Also when your missus does a bottom burp, you'll be able to smell that aswell.
