what you all use to convert?

i'm using mainconcept mpeg encoder, but i never know what resolution to choose. the divx file never seems to be the right ratio, and the picture gets squashed in a dimension instead of cropped.
any ideas how i can get around this or where to find a decent tutorial?

so do you trim to fit to resolution or squish?
