The right kind of cable?
Crossover rather than patch?

as james_dt has said sounds like the wrong cable, if you take both plugs and put them side by side if the wiring is identical on each plug you have a straight lead which is the wrong one, if colours of the wires are wierd differently it will be crossed which is what you need, that is if you are not using a network hub or router.

the wires are the same at both ends
its cat5e networking cable , on the back it says it can be used for file sharing and broadband sharing.

can get 30 metre cables for a tenner
You need a crossover cable pal. When connecting 2 PC's without a hub/switch, you need a crossover cable.
The cable you have is designed to plug into a hub/switch/router.

It's still a Cat5e cable by the way, you just need the other type.
