my mate has jus got a G4 powerbook and want to get this:

to make it wireless for his BT broardband connection.
he currently has a Dell Insprion 5100 laptop and needs a card to connect to the apple wireless network.
will any card work or does it need to be a special one? i have searched around 4 a n answer, but couldn find anything

You need a router also?
Dell lappa doesn't need to see Apple lappa - but they both must see the router.
Both will support TCP/IP so you will be fine.

Both machines could act as router to the internet connection but the problem is that which ever computer you nominate to do this must be powered up when you want connection on the other one.
Router sits there on all the time and the laptops come and go, bit more robust.

get him to get an Aiport Express as well and thats your router for the internet access 
Although it might be better off asking on a mac forum or something

yeh that link its the airport express thingy.
jus found a card that supports 802.11G. might jus get him 2 try that, seems all a bit too complicated for me, hel prob expect me to set it up 4 him too

Two choices:
Use Apple laptop as router.
Internet plugs in to Apple laptop
Dell communicates wirelessly with Apple
Apple must be on or Dell doesnt have connection to internet
Use a dedicated router
Internet plugs in to router
Apple gets internet from router
Dell gets internet from router
No requirement for Apple to be present/switched on if you want to use Dell

You mean can the Apple route the connection to non-Apple machines? Yes - its just TCP/IP.

Ian - this basestation thing is wireless tho, so done see why you would need option 1.
option 2 is what hel prob wana do. but the base station will ACT as the router though? as it is basically a wireless router.
but the problem with this is will any 802.11G card for the Dell be compatible with the Apple BaseStation?

all of this needs to be wireless though, dnt see how ur gona emit a connection FROM the powerbook and to the Dell.
