what is teh best way to speed up my computer?
2.8GHZ pentium 4
256mb ram
60GB hard drive
I've just noticed it's getting really slow lately.
I was thinking of adding more RAM? I tend to have a lot of programs open at once usually pretty big ones eg. graphics programs, email, Itunes + internet etc etc.

Corsair, Kingston, Geil or OCZ are probably the best, but only worth getting if your overclocking, Crucial is good stable stuff for not overclocking.

Try www.download.com And Look for a Program Called SI Software Sandra. This tells you loads of stuff about your PC. Exact Spec CPU Temp, Case Temp etc providing your Computer has the sensors.

Changing your CPUs clockspeed in BIOS by changing either the Front Side Bus or Multiplier. FSB is limited by the speed and quality of your RAM.
Clockspeed = FSB x Multiplier
Ie 200 x 11 = 2.2Ghz

They don't slow down on their own, sounds like you need to have a clear out and possibly reinstall windows.
That and get more RAM.

Well they sorta do, as applications get more resource dependant, your PC is in effect slowing down.

at the cost or memory nowadays i'd go for 1Gb or 512mb minimum. That should see a big improvement.
Next would be faster processor, you using a intel which if it was me id swap it all for an AMD 64bit system or upgrade yours to 3.2Ghz minimum.
36dgrees is a good running temp so no problem there.
but i'd go for AMD, i used to build AMD machines for a company in milton keynes and AMD sooo much better/cheaper/reliable than intel

Intels are better for stability and running professional apps etc etc hence why every person that does graphics/video/music editing/CAD run intels etc.
But still, upgrade ram (512mb min, or the big gb if you feel posh ) and then defrag and have a bit of a clear out etc (unistall programs you dont use etc etc). If it still feels like cack, format reinstall windows
