Hi guys,
Having a bit of a nightmare with a PC! Every time the PC is put under load (ie/ burning a disc, running a game, even on the net sometimes) I get the blue screen of death and XP does a memory dump.
The other thing I have noticed is that when I am installing new software, especially when things have got to be extracted I am getting lots of errors and when the extraction finishes it says the info is corrupt?
Does this sound like corrupt RAM? I have reinstalled XP which goes on no problem, the problems start when I start to put on the updates (I have SP1 and 2 on disk)
PC is a 3000+ XP 64 Athlon, 512 MB DDR400 RAM, 120 GB HDD. All new.
Any ideas anyone?

what does it say on the blue screen? does the ram match? it could be your version of xp mate what build is it?

well you are using the right ram for that, is it a shit make? sometimes it can conflict, get some corsair or crucial, id say it will be the ram conflicting with something

Nah, only got one stick of RAM in so it cant be a conflict of RAM. Think the RAM is just a cheap Elixir but Ive never had problems in the past with it?
Not sure what the version of XP is but again, ive built about 30 PC's using the same one and have nevr had an issue?
Blue screen says something about me installing new hardware and to return to the last known good configuration, even tho no new hardware has been added.
Im just wondering whether it could even be a faulty CD drive? Cos the updates went on with a few errors as I said before on extraction, this could be causing it?

there is usually an error given and then says something about hardware or software, when does it usually happen? could be your drive? try with another drive, do same thing 2 get the error, if still does then it aint drive, where did u get this version of xp? wasnt from dell?
make sure all hardware is installed correctly with updated drivers, no conflictions!

theres also alot of faulty upgrades if youve downloaded it try getting a better file!, if not make sure disc aint scratched 2 much lol

i defragmented my disk last night
got blue screen for 1st time in years on this machine
now takes 2 attempts to get it started

Bloody computers eh?!!!! 
Think Im going to systematically replace every piece of hardware with spare parts that I know work! Ill get to the bottom of it eventually!

i had the EXACT same problem with my laptop mate. are you gettin messages like BAD_POOL_CALLER and such? I thought it was faulty RAM but after sending it of to the Acer repair centre it turned out the HDD was faulty. Replaced it and its all good now

are the errors to do with extracting .cab files?
if so thsi coudl be faulty ram

Sounds like RAM problem. Hopefully its just the ram and not the NB, otherwise that might be costly to fix...

I bet theres an ECS board in there or something.
You know on the blue screen of death, is it a STOP error?

Yeah, Ill write down exactly what it says.
I know at the top it says summat like:
"Windows has shut down to stop damage to your system"

Yeah write down the error, but I recon it could be RAM as well.
Was computer formated before you got it off the family member?

There are usually 3 main culprits:
1 - RAM
2 - PSU
3 - Motherboard bios preset voltages.
Cheap motherboards are well known for this, especially ECS boards. Just requires a little tweaking

Off the top of my head the board I got was a cheap one, I think its a - Gigabyte GA-7VM333M-RZ KM266Pro BUT it could be one of the other models that are the same sort of money? 
What do you mean by little voltage tweaks? Are the talking the voltage to the PSU?
Just had another little thought.............could it be caused if I havent disabled the onboard VGA and am using the AGP slot with a 128mb card? Not 100% sure if the card i bought had onboard VGA but it could have?

No that wont make any difference.
A 128mb card wont have onboard VGA, as it is a dedicated VGA card if you want to free up resources tho it would be best to disable it in the bios unless u want to run 2 monitors
