hi., i have a corsa 1.2 sxi b model
My car keeps overheating, my initial thoughts was that the fan might not have worked, so i hooked it upto 12 volts and it worked no probs
however it never kicks in, the car jsut goes right the way up
Someone suggested it might be the thermostat but just wanted some 'Proper' advice
Hope someone can help

Most likely the fan control thermostat. It's located in the radiator, down at the off side of the rad, near the bottom.
If you look in, you'll see it. Best way to see if thats up the duff is to disconnect its plug, then use a bit of wire to bridge the contacts inside the wiring plug. Turn on the ignition, if the fans comes on, the thermostats knackered.
To fit new one, you have to drain the rad, then unscrew the sensor. Replace with new one, along with fresh o-ring seal. Be careful tho, I tried this and the one in there cross threaded and now I cant get it out.

do you have to get under the car to see this thermostat ..
sorry i am a bit unsure as to where that is.
When you said test it, i presume you mean when the engine is cold ?

Open bonnet, look down here...
It sticks out of the side of the rad, can see it from above. It has a wire going into it. Unplug this wire, and put a piece of wire across the metal contacts inside it (I'm talking about contacts on the connector attached to the wiring loom, not the switch itself).
Turn key in ignition, dont need to start it, jut so your electrics come on. If the fan starts up, the thermostat is faulty and needs to be replaced. Engine doesnt have to be cold to do this.

I dont know much about the 1.2 16v engines but on all others the fan switch in the rad and the thermostat are two different bits.
The fan is only there to cool the engine if you are stuck with no air flow through the rad.
I'd get the thermostat on the engine changed first

I'd say its a thermostat thats stuck shut from sounds of it. How long does it take your rad to get warm from when the engine is started? When is it overheating - when your in traffic? What does it shoot up to and what happens?

when moving the temp always statys down, if if im stuck in queues then thats when it goes up..
There's a few different thought on this.
Stange thing is, i havent see a switch that is mentioned on the radiators
the only thing i can find around the radiator is looking from the front of the car on the left hand side of the raditor , there is a plug , this is connected to the black on the edges, it has like a green nut on it

i connected the pins together with some pointed pliers and nowt happened

any ideas guys, are we led to believe that its the thermostat,
i didnt think it was the thermostat as when a thermostat went on my fiesta , the temp dial in my car didnt work and alwyas stayed on cold

my temp sender which is on the thermastat and is a spade connecter was fault for my false heat reading. My XE would constantly sit at 100 degrees and i thought something was wrong as fan was not coming on till really high indication. I took the temp sender out and replaced with a new one as well as a fresh spade connector to improve connection. Now seems to be fine
I'd say try working your way round the thermastat, ECU temp sensor, Temp Sensor as they are not that expensive.
