There is also a registry mod that is good if you have more than 512mb of RAM, it keeps the entire XP system core in physical memory and boosts performance.
i have 512?

Richie, when you said to change the registry value to 1 then restart...do you need to change it back again?
Cheers

No, you dont need to change it back again.
Casper, performance increase is negotiable as it depends on how many programs you have open at once

jus did whatu said Richie and ive seen a slight improvement cheers
by the way, i have a 180GB HDD, but partitioned into 140GB for Windows, and 50GB for other bits. If i was to format the drive, to re-install XP, and start again, would i lose the parititon?
only wondering because i was going to put all my movies, music and application installers i wanted to keep onto this 50GB partition and re-install the bits i wanted.
would that work?

I would just like to say Thanks a lot Richie! I hardly ever post on here but I read often.
Having followed your advice on clearing the pagefile on shutdown and deleting items in the Prefetch folder have noticed faster shutdowns and bootups.
