The intercooler doesn't cool the engine, (the radiator alone does that) it cools the charge air.
If the charge air isn't suitably cooled and the knock sensor is non functional or has been removed, especially if the ignition has been advanced and boost increased, you run the risk of pinking and detonation which will lead to engine damage.
This will be particularly prevalent in hot weather and if the car is running too lean and or using cheap fuel.

Best get everything checked and only use Optimax

Better still, go for one of their charge coolers, but it will need modifying idealy.
Go for a bigger pre-rad, bigger reservoir (and don't mount it in the engine bay) and a larger capacity; higher power pump

the body condition is pretty solid theres a little rust behind the plastic arch on the rear. floor/boot/battery bay/roof is solid.
