unplugg the lambda sensor go for a drive, it will chuck up a fault when cruising at constant speed, when ya get back check the codes again, same code then there is ya fault, but as SRI-Co said, it does sound lambda related or god forbid the Air Flow Meter

funny how you mention the afm i though thats were the fault might be before i done the paper clip test... i was gonna unplug it and see what effect it has.... hrm...
i'll unplug the lambda sensor and then drive home from here(work) and see what happens...

first check if you have any air leaks, or split hoses...

righty had a look around for any leaks there might be but theres none...
so after rerouting a few hoses that i thought were untidy i decided to check the fault codes again... its only then when i turned the ignition that i notice a strange noise... like either something frying or jamming...
firstly though it was the afm cos it sounded like it was coming from that area... so i pluged theat out and the noise was still there....
its coming form the icv it sounds righty fooked
this would explain the high idle.... but would it explain the lean mixture?(not to sure of what the icv actually does appart from hold the cars idles speed)

my lambda and CAT was worn out so failed MOT emmissions badly!!
so get it sorted ASAP man, a dodgy lambda means too much unburnt fuel could be going into the CAT and damaging it... a new cat from vaux is about £300!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah the icv controls the idle rate of the car, and can also be the cause of jerly acceleration/de-celleration as many people experience
new lambda from VAUX is about £100 - 3wire
new ICV as also about £100 i think, but its best to give it a good clean first and try it....
ive been meaning to do ths in mine, but in the c16xe gsi it is a kunt to get at with the standard inlet manifold, its right underneath it next to the throtle body which also needs to come out... but as mine did, the screws are a hard task to get at, migh thave to go uncer the car as you have to hold the nut from spinning on the back while unscrewing it from the front if u get wat i mean lol!!

100 quid... fook ... i have a manztel so it easyer to get to but the mantzel still needs to come off...
p.s a cat should cost you no more than 90 quid

If you spray it with wd40 let this soak in and then spray some more, let this soak in and spray some more again! then it should come out quite easily
