OK basically the cat on my Astra is knackered and needs to be replaced ASAP. The place I got it looked at today has quoted me £165 for a new one all inc. but I was just wondering, would it be cheaper to get a de-cat pipe fitted?

It's a mk3 Astra with the X14XE engine.

Thanks.

Yeah I know, my MOT isn't due until February 2006 anyway. It only just scraped through the emissions test in February with my knackered cat.

I've heard that de-cat pipes make the engine slightly more responsive and are cheaper than normal cats; is this true?

I know... I just spoke to an exhaust place, they said the government is bring out some new thing so if any cars that are supposed to have a cat don't, and get pulled over by the cops etc. they get an instant £800 -
