Ah no probs the best for the money then would be the 106GTi Great handling and quick little hatch.
Few guys from here have them and never here any horror stories so  Happy Days
Worth checking the 106 forums though so you know what to look out for

fiat punto gts are nice and very fast, but ive heard there not really reliable. or its hard to find a good one.
i would get a saxo vts, fast reliable car, with all the refinements, plus it wont criple you on insurance. or a vtr would still be a big step up from a 1 ltr and its cheaper to buy and insure than the vts.
most corsa people hate them, but they ae a good car, and have plenty of modding potential.
