Does the camera have zoom? If so get further away from the car and use it.

Lighting is best on the third as the sun is behind you also, just watch you don't put your own shadow in the pic.

Car is looking better all the time as well which helps

What difference does it make using zoom from a distance or taking the picture from a bit closer?

Surely the zoom just makes the quality of the pic worse?

Optical zoom - ie. that done by a lens will have no effect on image quality as such. Digital zoom which is done inside the camera will do as you're basically taking the picture and discarding the outer portion in order to zoom.

The difference is in perspective, compare this telephoto pic

to this wide pic

The cars are roughly the same size in the frame but the perspective is very different. Compare the size of the back wheel for an indication of the effect - on the wide pic its a lot smaller than the front. On the telephoto pic its a comparable size as its not relatively all that much further away compared to how far I was from the car.

The eye doesn't very often do this for you, so the general effect is that you see something un-natural and thus fairly interesting.

watch the light hitting the car. I know it's hard but you have a lot of refection, highlight and shadow not an even spread of light.
