relative just popped by in an oldish bmw, older shape 3 series maybe r reg?

done 38k miles, but the temp guage is rising

there is plenty of coolant, but fan doesnt come on at any time..ideas what might be wrong? i know nothing but basics

Coolent temp sensor is broken.

any ideas if they are costly for that type of car..and is it relatively easy to swap over..or does it involve draining the rad and stuff
