a friend of mine has got given a letter that he will receive a free upgrade to 8mb broadband. I can remember someone saying on here that out of that 8mb the fastest you'll ever see is 6/7mb, is this true?
If so why?
(he does live close to the exchange).

Its normally up to 8mb have to live within a silly distance of the exchange (think its 2km) to get the full 8mb
He will get what is know as the 'Maximum Stable Rate',
This speed is a figure representing the best broadband speed you can receive during normal everyday conditions.
The speed can go up or down depending on the quality or length of your telephone line, as well as weather conditions.
So at times he may have 8mb but not all the time.
But if they are doing it for free who cares.
