top one f2.8 1/800s iso100 200mm
bottom f1.4 1/250s iso 100 30mm
Did you take them as raw and then alter there colour in photoshop?

raw, adjust them as colour then adjust them as B&W. depending on how you adjust for colour can affect how it comes out B&W

Do you always adjust the colour in photoshop?
It just seems like spending loads of money on lenses should be why you don't have to up the brightness or saturation of the pic. Surely the lens should be capable of providing the colours and the brightness for the pic.

RAW is a digital negative it has had no processing don at all. digital camera's record very bland non contrasty images. jpegs have had their contrast, saturation, sharpness boosted by the camera.
you can control these in the dark room too

Ahh ok that makes sense now, cheers.
So adjusting the image's saturation, contrast on the pc etc is in film world the same as when processing film in a dark room.

Foreground isn't sufficiently prominent in the first one, and I don't like the bokeh in the second.
