spray carb cleaner around the engine bay while the engine is running. Spray it in small bursts in different places, and when the hissing stops, you know it is an air leak somewhere. Then just follow this to find yuor problem.
If it doesn't stop hissing at all while your spraying, I'm afraid its probably the above problem.

timing could be out, faulty DIS pack, air leak, ........
could be lots of things Rob. start by checking the timing marks are all lined up, then find out which cylinder it isnt running on by pulling out a lead at a time. you will hear which one is missing.
check the condition of the plugs. (this is probably the first thing to do before the timing check actually) if your not sure what you are looking for post up a pic of them. Dont assume its something serious like head gasket, its usually something simple on these engines. i did one a while back for a mate, had the same symptoms. garage told him a load of bollocks about his head gasket had gone, compression was low, piston rings were fooked, bla bla bla....gave him a massive quote.
turned out to be a map sensor

Ok mate, ill go take the plugs out in a bit and see what colour they are and take a picture, then ill put them back in and try pulling a lead off at a time... do i pull one off then replace then pull the next one off ? Can i just pull the lead off the dis pack end rather than the spark plug end to do this ?

Also if the head was gone would i be able to drive it ? i basically came back to the car park and parked up car running fine, then i start it up and it barely idles but revs freely and the revs drop down, driving it home if i was only on slight throttle it was fine ... dunno if that makes any difference ? then as soon as i booted it , it just bogged down and got slower..

pull 1 lead out, then replace it. do this at the plug end with a pair of insulated pliers.
actually, just use your hands, make sure they are wet tho, otherwise you will get a shock

Found a split in the MAP sensor hose the one that goes to it, quite a big split so just trying to repair it now fingers crossed that will be the problem... i just always thought an air leak makes the car idle higher..

an air leak in the main body of the system will make it idle higher, but a split map sensor hose will make it idle eraticly (sp) less pressure on the sensor= less engine load= lower revs

mine did this a week back.

Edit: I see u've fixed it now!!!
