Recently I've noticed that a whining can be heard from the engine as soon as its revved. The whine is in tune with the revs, and is only noticeable before 2.5k rpm. Now while driving back from uni, i was on a long stretch of road, so decided to push it a bit. Now I've discovered that when it gets to about 4k rpm+ the whining becomes incredibly loud, actually louder then the engine tone itself. It sort of sounds like a Supercharger, but obviously without any of the benefits
Its a 1.2 C, and all I've done is put in a Pipercross filter (no holes in the airbox or anything) but i don't think the filter's to blame as the whining was heard before i installed it. My dad told me it could be the alternator, but it's never happened before, just in the past couple of months.
Should i be worried? I have a 2 hour motorway journey on saturday, and i don't want the car to go pop halfway through. Thanks, in advance, to all that reply

Nope, everything in the car is completely stock minus the filter.

Is it a16v? I've noticed a few 1.2 16v recently around me that actually do seem to whine and also hiss a bit. A couple I have spoken to actually have air filters fitted too - these seem to be the ones that "whine" the most. So I may b wrong, but I think it may be normal

Is it related to engine speed or vehicle speed?

Yep it's a 16v. Well im glad to hear that its not a fault of some sort. It's weird though, i can hear it over my music.
In any case, i might put my Vaux filter back in, as i've noticed the car doesn't pick up as well as it used to.

Engine speed. I did 60-70 in 5th, under 4k rpm and no problems. Then i did about 30-40 in second gear (past 4k) and then it started whining again. (This was after i originally heard it, as i wanted to test it for engine/vehicle speed also)

yeh I don't think you'll find its a problem tbh - I know when a 1.2 16v is about to drive past me these days! Is quite noticeable, but I think its pretty much a noise that you have to put up with!
