Trying to check if my earth is dodgy, which setting do i need it on and what numbers do i look for?
i had it on the one which looks like a speaker and it showed 0 and if i connected it to positive and negative to something bare metal it would flash up a number? does that mean its a good earth

Looking at it I reckon it'll be the little speaker looking symbol to the right of the 200ohms (at the bottom) setting.
Should make a beep when it has continuity between the two probes.

its the diode tester. the bit above where it says: 10ADC. turn the meter onto this and hold the test probes together. should get a 'beep' from the meters.

Surelky the diode tester will only test for flow one way? i.e it weill beep one way and if you swap the probes around it won't be as it's be 'going against' the diode?
But then again my multimeter is proper old skool with a needle on a meter rather than a digital display - and beeping? That's for nancys!

As 808 said - the diode tester, and it'll probably read 1.00 but this depends on your multimeter.
Switch it onto that settings and touch the two probes togther and see what it displays on the screen - that will be your answer!
Edit: how are you trying to check your earth? are you checking from chassis to earth or from a 12v supply to earth?

the diode tester is what you want to use to test continuity. some meters dont beep, just give a reading. reading should go to 1 if there is continuity and if there is poor continuity will have a figure (usually 3 digits) in the display. For an earth you should get a 0 or 1 as a reading.

touch the probes together. what reading do you get?
whatever that reading is thats what you need to look for when testing the earth. if the number is higher than the number shown when testing the earth then you have poor continuity.
hope that makes sense
most modern meters do beep tho!

i was putting it on a positive cable then onto a point i want to earth my amp too. it was showing 1 constantly and it would flash a random number if i took it off a piece of metal.

thats not testing continuity! to test for an earthing point put the meters on the bit above 10ADC then put one lead onto a good earth and the other onto the point you wish to earth your amp. check there is good continuity (or connection) by looking for a figure similar to the one you get when touching the probes together.

or put it onto 20v dc then one onto a 12v positive and the other onto the point you wish to earth the amp. if you get 12v+ then that will be fine.

Put it to any one of the settings in bottom left corner.
If you have continuity it'll be a 1.
