Also check the rear axle, common fault on lowered 106's and it aint cheap to fix

my rear axle snapped and the anti roll bar
i bought a new one with gti rear disks and all in all it cost 750 to buy and fit !
then the front axle snapped 
i dont think id buy another french car again, i spent sooooooo much fixing that car ! im still payin off the barcley card bill that i used to pay only some of the problems !!!!!
owning one has totally put me off french totally

you guys scare the hell out of me with your peugeot problems.
Mine seems to be in a good conditon as its only covered 24k miles hehe and its an R 1998 reg.
Saying that, all that has gone on mine in the past 4 months is an Alternator belt.
All i would say is if your buying one Expect to have problems with it in the future as you will. Then you wont be annoyed.
The pay off for the gti is its handling and great performance.

Dodgy idling will be a sensor problem either in wires or faulty ICV. As Paul says aftermarket cams will cause a weird idle but mine cuts out and drops below 1000 revs at times which AINT RIGHT. Other problem ive had with 106s, ball joint on o/s drop link corroded. You can tell cos there was a knocking in the footwell.

erm idling under 1k revs is fine when its warm.
I have an idling problem on mine, it can be:
MAP Sensor
ICV Sensor
Lambda sensor
im stillworking it out now, i think its the lambda so hopefully mine will be sorted soon.

 sorry for scaring u. totally agree with the rest u said, expect problems and u wont be annoyed, i was annoyed ! it was my first car and i was like whyyyyy does it have to fcuk upp all the time
the handling is amazing in 106's and saxos !

dont know how you can compare a 106gti and a lupo gti. One is a well built warm hatch and one is a french built hot hatch which Clarkson describes as the best handeling front drive car of all time.
Corsa_carl made a good point, both my mates 106gtis have snapped rear axels and its a pig of a job

If you intend fitting cams at some point i'd steer clear of the later 3 plug ECU models and go for a "2 prong head" model.

TBH i would be more concerned if it were idling above 1000 rpm
