What is the purpose of the semi-circle on the centre of the outside of the box for?

for penatles.
the opposite side has to stand around that and the edge of the box so the striker can get a run at it.
i think thats correct.

all non penalty taking players must be 12 yeards from the spot......the semi circle marks out 12 yards

behind the penalty mark
