Just a quick question about modern turbo diesel engines....

They don't have dump valves on them do they because a TD engine doesn't need one right?

Also, why is this?

Thanks

I'm not getting a white car, I'm making one. I 'm getting a Grande Punto in a few months and I was just looking at some pictures of a horribly mutilated one which had a feck of great big dump valve on it which I thought was strange for a TD car...

Just my old car, been sitting about doing nothing with it for ages, so I have decided that at the end of the week it's time to actually sort it and paint it...

A TD does not need a dump valve. It is there just for the noise and to create more lag as the turbo has to spool up to create the pressure. Of a petrol engine when you come off the throttle the butterfly valve closes and the air has no-where to go exept through the dump valve. Without this the pressure between the turbo and throttle is going to build up and therefore slow down the turbo. On a Diesel there is no butterfly and the engine constantly sucks in air.

I am not the person who says I prefer petrol or diesel. I have driven both 1.2 8v, 16v, 1.5TD, 2.5D. If you love MPG and don't mind diesel engine sound go for diesel sure. You'd like the torque and turbo if it has one. My father's 2.5D on his isuzu pickup still pulls and responds well obviously if it had a turbo I think it would have been better. I find petrol engines to be more responsive. I wish to drive a VAG diesel .. they say they are very good.
