When my £600 refund for my old camera comes through im going for a canon 400d with kit lens and a 70-300 tamron lens and that still gives enough left for extra battery/memory cards

Canon is the best buy imo.
Pixels aren't everything though.

Don't buy an slr just becuase of more pixels.
Slrs are far superior to p&s but you will end up buying lenses and they are a lot bulkier to carry about.

what kind of use is the camera going to get? you might be better off buying a decent "slr" styled camera and a good few extras for that money, instead of a poverty spec dslr

go to Jessops and try them out. the canon 400 is very small and you may not like the feel of it. also consider the sony alpha 100. other 10mp cameras are out with your budget TBH

400d is massive when you're used to a point and shoot.
