Interesting about Soth America Jiz
Yes, it was only when the squad numbers came in that 9 became a strikers shirt number ie. Ronaldo, Nilmar, Elber etc...
In the 94 WC the two Brazilian attackers Romario 11 and Bebeto 7 with the central midfield being Dunga 8 and Rai 9.

R.I.P
Moroccan striker Zerouali scored 13 goals for Aberdeen.
Former Aberdeen striker Hicham Zerouali has died in a car accident in Rabat.
The Moroccan international, who was 27, played for Aberdeen between January 2000 and May 2002, scoring 13 goals.
He was a great favourite at Aberdeen, where he was allowed to wear zero as the squad number on his shirt - a tribute to his nickname Zero.
"Hicham was a lovely guy who was idolised by the fans here," said his former team-mate Russell Anderson.
"He was back at at Pittodrie earlier in the season to watch a game and was in great spirits.
was an excellent player and 0 on the back was class..

Gerrard is number 8, and before that he was 17. He only wears 4 in an England shirt 'cos Lampard took 8? 4 is a CB number, 6 is a CM number!
to name a a couple of defenders who wear 6 - Tony adams, John Terry, Franco Barasi , Richard Naylor, mik silvestre....and many more
as walby said, midfielders with 4 - vieria, fabrigas, veron (at man u).....
More defenders wear number 4 than they do number 6. Same for midfield, more 6's than 4's. But that's just from memory. Kinda iwhs I'd never found this thread now.

Squad numbers is better for a team I play in, because everyone used to fight over who had a certain number every Saturday, but referee's committee asked the league if squad numbers could be introduced to help them, so it was brought in, some other leagues have ID cards etc...
A teammate of mine always had to have 8 on his shirt, but a new player came to the team and wanted it too, so when it was brought in, my teammate had 8, and the other lad had 18, no arguing, I'm number 10
But recently changed from 23 to 7 on Sundays.
