Should people be investing in things such as this and say LSDs befor big power mods Yes/No?

Advantages of the system?? do they really lesser transmision power loss??

Anybody heard the Noise these make? Sound lovely on full tilt.

No need for one in a mildy tuned car.

Quicker gear changes.

Yes, they whine.

Good for tuned NA engines (esp TB) as it keeps the revs in the optimum range..

It can reduce the overall speed of the car, but the car will get to its top speed much quicker as the revs are in the "powerband" of the engine. On stand gearboxes, the revs drop much lower and drop out of the powerband, so it needs a few seconds to rise and to get to the best power level.

Also reduces slightly transmission power loss.

Quaiff do a 6 speed cog set for the F20 box. Or go the whole hog, £5k+ on a straight cut sequential box

Daimo, the straight cut-ness won't reduce the top speed alone, that would be if the ratios were different too.

they generally don't allow quicker changes either, but they are stronger, as there is no lateral load on the cog like you get with helical gears.

they can crunch, as helical gears mesh together easier, so they can make the car harder to drive.

but, for a properly built car, which you don't want on the road, they're ideal.

LSD can be useful even on a lightly modded car, as it helps traction in corners and off the line. Definately helpful for FWD cars

I love the noise they make, can imagine them to be a complete mare' for road use but obviously that's why people don't tend to shell out on them. Also it kind of removes a bit of character from the engine imo, hard to explain what I mean but watch rallying from inside the car.

Thats what ctr drivers hear when they hit vtec, except a bit louder.

diff = well worthwhile even on a std engine f its to be used hard on track or road

close ratio box (possibly with lower final drive) Fantastic for a b road car aor track car, but very loud on the motorway

straight cut gear cluster - absolutely pointless on a road car. not needed in vaux for strength, just fit an f28 only advantage is completely custom ratios and slightly lower losses. Ok on a track/rally car, but nothing else.

dads got straight cut gears in his mini. very expensive even in a mini (parts tend to be cheaper for minis)

as stated a pig to get used to changing gear. nice noise in my dads mini...

All minis have straight cut first gear and reverse as but the FD, drop gears and so on are all Helical. For the mini box you can also get semi helical gears which have a letter angle on them.

Iv been in a few cars with straight cut gears and they sound awesome if you know what your listening to otherwise people just think your gearbox is f*%£ed.

Straight cut gears aren’t physically as strong as Helical ones as they have less surface area to mesh and less surface area constantly in mesh. They do though reduce side loading forces on ten bearings and so less resistance in the box and more power going to the floor!
