Quickest way to get your plate put on retention is to drive to the DVLA office, fill in the form (cant remember off hand which one) Pay the man £105, go home wait up to 14 days, change the plates when you documents arrive & send off the old tax disc in the pre-paid envelope provided!!
Thats as quick as it gets im afraid!!!
Note - this should be stuck into tutorials or FAQ as its asked every bleedin week!!!

Yup
Technically you should have done the above as soon as you decided to sell your car. If he's just come along & offered you the cash then he will just have to wait until its ready!!

Mind & take your MOT & V5 along to the dvla office as they need that to process the change....they dont need the tax disc thats sent off after!!

They can do it there and then but they wont give you the docs back they have to send them to the registered address which is where you have to wait.
Mine took less than a week but a mate of mine was waiting over 3 weeks for his.

They stopped doing the full shabang over a year ago, will only accept the papers now which saves you a day or 2 over posting it!!
