on the x16, i belive both cams are identical (inlet and exhaust)...
would it give many gains changing either of the standard cams for a piper 256 jobbie?....
surely on the inlet it would allow a greater volume of air in for longer......improving torque???

yeah the inlet should give an improvement, it should have a longer duration and a slight higher lift!

The cams aren't Identical. Otherwise the valves would all open up at the same time and the engine wouldn't work.

the camshafts are the same, they are timed differently to stop valve opening at the same time

gains will be minimal, maybe 2 bhp if you are lucky. problem is that the map or cam timing wont have been adjusted to suit and the overlap between the inlet and exhaust cam with them being different profiles might mean that you may even lose power. it would also probably run slighty lean as the valve being open for longer will mean more fuel/air is available but the injector duration wont be any greater. if you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator you could increase the pressure slighly (not ideal as the duration is more important) but can only be done properly on a RR with a wideband lambda probe
I always map road cars to run slightly on the rich side as the more fuel, the cooler/safer the engine will run a lean engine will be hotter and more prone to engine damage.

i have not looked at the spec of these cams but going off the profile i'm guessing they are reprofiled cams? if so they are profiled to run with all standard parts and maps, if the fueling is low the lambda should pick this up and alter the injector cycle accordingly. these aren't wild cams so there should be no running problems at all.

why bother?
it cant be dialled in and could cause the engine to run lean.
I will put a fiver on it that fitting the inlet cam with no other mods and fitted timing and fuelling not adjusted that it will lose power if anything.

its never going to do that when its designed to run with a standard engine (if its reprofiled) i have fitted reprofileds before and never needed to change the fueling, reprofileds are also designed to be fitted in the standard timing marks, the same also goes for high torque cams.
If piper tell you they not reprofiled and need to be fiited with verniers then thats how its done, if not then leave it!

so with standard timing marks and standard fuelling explain what the gains are in fitting this cam.......

Not ideal, but as you say, the gains are going to be minimal. If it was mapped properly then it would be a bit more worth while.

the piper 256 re-profiled cams are suppose to give 10-12bhp on an other wise standard engine, this is what piper quote. i would put it in the inlet side callum, your gonna get it mapped at some point in the future anyway arent you?

duno yet mate......i have no plans on putting it into mine, just some evidence for potential buyers.....

may not get mine mapped just yet......may wait untill i can afford a decent management system.
