i admit 256 is not a lot, but for word processing and browsing the internet it's sufficient
I have 486mb in mine, it does me fine. You do not need 1GB of memory for the above.

256MB will cause alot of memory paging to happen which will cause noticable slow down when swiching folders (bare in mind most laptops use 4200rpm drives, which makes paging even slower still). I guess it depends on the person but that would get rather annoying after awhile. 512MB is really the minimum any machine should be using if its running XP. Makes the machines a million times faster. Myself i'd rather go for 1GB, even on a system thats only 'word processing' and doing internet stuff. On this laptop here with 1GB of ram, even just on the desktop with IE7 and a few webpages open memory usage is over 410MB.

I run XP Pro on mine and I experience and I encounter no slowdowns or anything like that. This is with multiple explorer windows open, MSN, Poker.net game windows etc....

Im happy, stop arguing.
