I've been having a look at the Japanese PS3s that are floating about, but whilst i've heard that they are region free and whatnot, i've heard that you won't be able to play online with them, due to them requiring a japanese credit card or something? Anyone know anything about this?

Not sure on the japanese PS3, but i know the US ones you can register online using an US zip code from anywhere and can use any credit/debit cards apparently. Obviously the Blu-Ray dvds will be region locked, however the games are not region locked (there's talk they may be but i don't think it will happen) Anyway it works out cheaper to import Blu-Ray dvd's and games from the US\JP than buying them here at the RRP.
Best bet would be to go with a US one.
Prices come down drastically since xmas and im very tempted. Would work out about same price to buy now than wait till March release. Due to the high sterling price.

you wont need a japanese credit but a japanese account, they only check your card details if your buying anything from your ps3 with it.
it would also be a bit of a headache if it went wrong and there some out there that are.you could get one now but check to make sure the games are out at the moment or in the very near future for it that you want. it would be nuts to go through all that effort only for it to sit there collecting dust for 6 months.
if your thinking of downloading demos then make sure they arent for the japanese market only like GT:HD as they can be tricky to get hold of

Yeah, I knew they were region free but I wasn't sure what was happening with the networking side of things
