I'd go for the 1.6. I imagine it would be quite good on fuel on a moterway journy. 1.4 16v's are pretty good but like said before you'd want the 1.6 after a while and traveling on moterway will probably be best in 1.6 anyway

go for the td-
cheap and easy mods are very easily done on the izuzu engines, both the 1.5 and the 1.7
turn boost up- alot
front mount intercooler-
fuel mod to increase fueling-
bigger bore exhaust
just doing them alone give very good gains on the izuzu engine- mates cav 1.7td runs similar mods and a few others and is very impressive and upsets alot of other road users.
also the td izuzu is bombproof and uses sod all fuel!!!

after having my car written off, i have a got a astra 1.7d-no turbo-fuel economy is just amazing

the td engines are quite nippy and as said before they are bomb proof

Go for the TD, with minor boost and fuel mods you should see over 90 bhp with over 100 lb/ft. EDIT :- and 50 mpg
