I thought I'd have a crack at some canvases for friends.
Just done my first one so it's pretty simple, but looks ok imo.
First I'd just like to say a big THANKS! to JadeM who insipred me to get off my arse and do it after she made her thread about making the paintings she does, initially I was going to replicate the method Jade uses, but after having a think about it I thought I'd start with something simple (I've never used Plaster of Paris before) and maybe try and develop my own style of things (hark at me!  )
Anyway, I'm pretty chuffed with the end result and will be doing some more with a different choice of colours 
N.B ignore the old bedsheet they were done on and the shakey camera hand!
Ok, first get two blank canvases (these were on offer at Aldi a few weeks back - £4 each)
Then paint them the colour that you want to be most prominent (In this case - baby blue (although they still look unpainted )
Once the base colour has dried, take your masking tape, car bumper insert tape (no, seriously!) and a couple of cans of drink to seperate the canvases.
Pull the tape across the two canvses in a random order that you see fit:
Make sure that the tape is fully stuck to the canvas - if it comes up during the next stage there couold be trouble!
Once happy with your striping go over the top with the secondary colour (in this case lylic, not as bright as it looks in the pics - this is because of the flash on my phone camera)
Not that some of the tape on the left urled up when the paint got onto it, after i saw this happen I started concentrating on painting over one piece of tape at a time rather than several and it seemed to work after that.
And finally remove the tape, I done this whilst the paint was still a bit damp (I didn't want to risk the tape pulling off any dry paint afterwards), I don't think this was really neccesary as the paint isn't thick enough to be affected by it drying.
Taa daa! All done.
Next time I plan to use more widths of tape rather than just two widths (25mm and 12mm was used) and pick two more contrastning colours - probably something like biscuit and sky blue or a red.
Rough cost for that one was:
£8 canvases (2x£4)
£2 paint (2x£1 pots of 75ml B&Q matt "One coat" tester pots)
Couple of extra quid for a few rolls of masking tape and bumper tape, I used a mini paint roller rather than a paint brush and job done.
Opinions good or bad are gratefully recieved.

WELL DONE !!!! They're ace Jules, you've given me some ideas now. I never thought of using masking tape! Bet your friends will be well chuffed

I use masking tape, usually buy a chunky canvas and 4 different widths of tape
paint canvas main colour, add first width of tape, paint between lines, dry, and repeat with colours.
First one i did was cream, brown, mocha and a diff shade of creamy brown
looks good jules

Cheers ppl, Ally - pics please? I was trying to work out how to use different layers on different colours but couldn't think more than two colours before my brain started hurting! lol

I think you have to get to the stage you're at now, then re-apply tape, and add another colour over the top 
not sure if that'd work very well though

Works every time for me, done a mini tutorial if anyone wants to have a look

Painted over that one to do another one for my Mum (no-one wanted the original).
She asked for a coffe with sky blue colour scheme and prefered curved lines rather than just straight ones.
So off to B&Q I went, I got some stretchy masking tape that is designed to be flexible enough to be able to do curves without creasing, the only trouble is that after a short amount of time it does start to lift so you have to work quick!
Same method as before, apply base coat (the colour of the lines): Dulux Soft Truffle
Then the secondary color: B&Q Blue Light
Will get another pic once it's hung etc etc

didn't know you could get stretchy masking tape that you could bend so much! That looks pretty sweet that mate. Think i'll give that a whirl when i get a minute.

A J - do it m8, pretty simple tbh!
Carl - yeah you can, B&Q do it but you have to work pretty quick as it does tend to lift fairly quickly so paint over the masked bits first then fill in the big areas

What paint do i need for canvas? I've never attempted anything like that before so i have no idea. They look really cool tho.

I just buy the tester pots of matt paint, a couple of pots is enough to do two canvases of that size.
Little tip, when you're done with the painting don't throw the paint away as when you take the masking tape off you may find that some has leaked underneath it, if it has then wait for it to dry fully then use a small paintbrush or a cotton bud to touch it up and tidy the edges.

Normal masking tape doesn't, it just creases and folds, this stuff is kind of elasticated slightly so you can pull it round corners - t'is pretty cool stuff
