I've read that the Carling Cup is a way of getting a UEFA Cup spot but does this only apply to the Premiership teams taking part??

When Man United won the FA Cup in 2004 they had already qualfied for CL yet Millwall didn't get a spot.

From what i remember yeah, 1 of the legs was high scoring as well and they lost by a goal afaik

yes we lost against them away from home.
was an unlucky game actually one we should of at least got a replay from.

we got in uefa cup when we beat united 1-0 in the 1991 LC.
we was in 2nd division too when we won it.
