Righto, I've got a problem and I've yet to find the cause!

Im currently driving a 1.4i 5 Door N (96) Reg Corsa

Ive fitted some 15" alloys with 195 width, While stationary it appears fine plently of clearance as Im on standard springs and brand new gas shockers.

I was hoping to lower it eventually but worried due to a strange problem when driving.

If I take a corner sharp the rear left wheel seems to be rubbing on the arch, As I've said I've had new gas shockers, and the wheel bearings have been checked by a mechanic when I had the car serviced, the wheels have also been recently balanced.

Is it possible that the spring has become lazy? dont know if its possible as it only really occurs when cornering, its like a rattling sound from the rear left side.

The right side however doesnt vibrate or rub?

anyone experienced anything like this?

Some of the rear beams on vauxhalls aint central.

had this on my old nova. Used to rub on the coilovers on the passenger side but not the drivers.

Nothing you can really do about it matey

yeah, mine tends to scrape on the one side more than the other...I thought it was something to do with position of fuel tank though?

It seems its not the only time I get a strange noise. going down the motorway if I go 60-70 mph I get a similar vibration sound, but the arch issue seems increasingly bad after turning off a motorway!

hmm weird one, if the rubbing is bad on the arch, jack car up, remove wheel and look at the arch from underneath the car, you will see it has started to melt more than likely, trim it away as much as needed and refit.

trial and error.

I guess! but when the car is sat there is like 40mm gap between the tyre and arch! and with me in the car it doesnt make even a tiny difference!

May have been in a knock before you got the car. Get it on a jig and check everything lines up as it should. If not its not much to replace a rear beam!

probably knackered springs then, sound like they are far too soft and compressing too easily.

I dont understand why you would uprate the shocks and not the springs ne ways! try an uprated stiffer spring. as dave has said!

It wasnt anything expensive! just gas ones instead of hydrolics [sp]? cost £20 each from halfrauds!

I did notice when removing boot strips that one side isnt faded at all? could that explain a knock?

i havent tried my other wheels back on no! cud it be the offset of the alloy wheels? the only reason i think it isnt because it doesnt do it on the right hand side

This sounds like a problem involving the offset of your alloys.

I had a set of 16's on my nova and they were a 38mm offset (Vaux is 49mm) which meant they rubbed just about ALL the time.

It should be stamped on the inside of your wheel (should read ETXX - XX being digits, 40 for example)

Check it and see

Im gonna go looksie when its a bit lighter, gonna get under the car and see if I can see any signs of rubbing, the only place I can see theres been rubbing is on the arch so far, but that doesnt explain the strange noise on the motorways.

The motorway sound could be enhanced by my paranoir that something isnt quite right, but I'll let you know my findings in a few hours.
