PREMIERSHIP clubs have been accused of ripping off fans after research revealed they charge up to FOUR times their European rivals for season tickets.
Lib Dem shadow sports Secretary Don Foster wants to ramp up the pressure on the Premier League to act now and reduce the cost of watching football. Foster's research has proved that season tickets in England's top flight cost four times more than in Germany, Italy and Holland.
And they are three times more expensive than in Spain, France and Portugal.
Foster has accused clubs or chasing "short-term profits over the long-term interests of the game."
Chelsea charge £650 for their cheapest season ticket and Manchester United £437.
But Spanish fans can watch Barcelona for a whole season for £167 and Real Madrid for £202.
The German champs Bayern Munich charge £169 for their cheapest seats for a season and Werder Bremen £88.
And in Italy, Inter fans pay £91 and Roma £159, while Portuguese supporters fork out just £153 to see their champs, Porto.
Pressure is building on clubs to start reducing their ticket prices amid growing concern working- class fans are being priced out of watching the game. Sports Minister Richard Caborn told Mirror Sport last month that clubs should use next season's extra TV cash to help more fans watch the game.
There is cross-party support for action in the Commons and Foster said: "English fans will feel they are being conned."
"Premiership season tickets prices may not have rocketed this year like before but they're still in another league in the rip-off stakes.
"Clubs are asking fans to pay as much for season tickets as they do for holidays. On the continent, you can get a season ticket for less than a weekend break."
