my mate has just bought a 1.4 sri 8v like mine only on a 93 plate, completey standard.

anyway he has had it for tqo weeks and the bolt on the tensioner snapped, we got a new tensioner and belt put it all together and the engine is jammed when we moved the sprocket round. took the rocker off to find all the followers bar 1 have snapped.

basically we need to know what is inviolved on fixing and how much it may cost.

how much are followers and how much is a garage likely to charge to get the cam off and replce the followers.

or would it be a better option to buy the tool ourself and do it. my dad is in engineering so will do the work.

could the valves be damaged aswell and if so how much are they to replace.

could anything else be damaged abnd need replacing.

please help with prices for the above and advice.

£100-£150 for a new engine
timing belt & idler kit - £70 or so

will be cheaper than stipping & fixing the current engine

tbh mate thats not really an option as my dad does not have the time to replace the engine. and its probably alot of work.

i do know a garage that does work cheap for me, this garage done my headgasket when it went for £140 which is quite cheap. but i just wanted some prices really on what it owuld cost to fix.

price for followers
price for valves if needed
price for tool to remove cam and do ourself.
price fopr garage to do work

its quite a simple job tbh, can be done in a day when its a straight swap.

if you need to do it yourself tho and repairing the current engine is what you want to do (will take longer tbh)

look at about £400-£500 for a garage to do it (strip engine, strip head, replace valves, guides, lifters), new timing belt & idlers, also if the head is damaged (if the valves got bashed into it) expect more cost.

yeah but if there bust, the cause will probably be the force of the valves getting hammered by the pistons, in which case you still need to take the head off & cams to replace those...

because the valves will be bent, and you'll be needing new ones.

oh yes sorry i thought paul w was refering to removing the cam.

well im assuming this was all caused by the fact that the tensioner snapped. but i was always under the impression that the 8v model was just a case of replcing belt and tensioner if the belt broke, and the enigne would not be at risk. only the 16v were. but obviously this is not the case

valves needent be bent. Early gm engine always used to break followers when cambelt went but never used to bend valves.

First thing i would do is take all the broken bits out time it up and try turning it over if you cant turn it over then its defo head off if you can then you may be lucky!

exactly . and you can replace the followers without any special tools. Just push the vavle top hat down with a big screwdriver and slip the follower in with a magnet.

Make sure you remove the 7 little tophats too!

if timing belt has come off you could have to spend more than a 2nd hand engine would cost. It will be quicker to take an engine out for a straight swop than to start fucking about with the old one

dunno if u can checked a valve on a car like we do on trucks, if u hit them with hammer and punch, and see if they go right down and back up smoothly, if they get stuck or wont even move then there fooked.

like i say, dunno if u can do this on a car.

um dunno mate, gona get a price on followers 2moro for his car, and then go from there.

been told by some one else today that if the engine turns fine when we take the broken followers off then it will probably be fine with new followers. so hopefully they are not expensive.
